This region was known in the West since the times of Strabo and Ptolomeus, that is since the first millenium B.C. It is a vast territory lays from Aral sea up to Chinese province Kansu, as a matter of fact up to the most western citiy of China - Tuan-huang, from southern Siberia and Altai up to mountain ridges of Hindu Kush in Afghanistan and northern spurs of Tibet the Altin-tog. Five former Soviet republics lay in the western part of Central Asian region while east part is a part of Peoples Republic of China.

Turkmenistan - the country laying on the north from mountain ridges of Kopet Dagh, between Caspian Sea and Amu Darya. In the North and northeast Turkmenistan borders with Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, in the South and a southeast with Iran and Afghanistan. The desert Kara Kum ("Black sand") covers 80 % of territory of the country. It is a little fertile ground - at bottom of Kopet Dagh and in oases where the life is born with waters of the rivers Tadzhan, Megrib and Amu Darya.
